Worked through with you, not done to you

Accredo inspectors are experienced educators who have taught, led, and been inspected themselves — former principals, professors, registrars, and quality managers. That matters, because the process is designed as a joint effort rather than an audit performed on an institution from the outside.

Every applicant is assigned a named liaison who stays with you from the scoping call through to the award. The review begins with a guided self-evaluation, then moves to a shared walk-through of every area covered by your application, so nothing in the inspector's report is a surprise on the day it arrives.

Application

Institutions begin by registering and submitting documentation covering mission and values, governance, curriculum, faculty qualifications, student services, premises, and quality processes. The documents checklist is proportionate to institution size — a language centre is not asked for university-scale paperwork. Registration takes about ten minutes and carries no obligation; your fixed written quotation for the full four-year cycle follows the scoping call.

Preparation and self-evaluation

Once your application is received, your liaison helps you begin the self-evaluation: you and your key staff review programmes, policies, and operations against the ten Accredo Standards. Most institutions tell us this stage is where the value lands — the discipline of evidencing your own claims surfaces improvements you implement before an inspector ever arrives.

Site visit

When the self-evaluation is complete, and at a time convenient to you, Accredo conducts the inspection. The lead inspector assembles an evaluation team — which may include subject specialists and, where relevant, safeguarding expertise — to assess facilities, interview leadership, staff and students, and observe teaching in progress. For online and hybrid institutions the same inspection is conducted remotely, with evaluator access to the live platform.

What is evaluated

Accreditation covers academic quality, institutional integrity, and continuous improvement. Inspectors assess staff qualifications, curriculum relevance, student learning outcomes, and institutional resources including libraries, classrooms, laboratories and digital platforms. Institutions must also demonstrate financial sustainability, ethical practice, effective governance, and genuine commitment to the health, safety and security of students and staff.

Beyond the checklist, the review asks whether your institution's stated mission is actually reflected in how its faculties teach and assess — alongside your approach to inclusivity, diversity, community involvement, and student support. A teaching-focused college is judged on delivering its own mission well, not against a research university's template.

Evaluation and decision

After the visit, the lead inspector reviews the self-evaluation report, the documentation, and everything gathered on site, then drafts a graded report against each of the ten standards. That report is independently moderated before it reaches the Accreditation Board — the inspectors who visited do not decide the outcome alone, which protects both rigour and fairness.

The Board grants full accreditation, defers pending specified additional information or actions, or — where standards are not met — declines. A decline is never a bare rejection: you receive a detailed assessment identifying every area of deficiency with clear, actionable recommendations, and a follow-up assessment can be scheduled within a mutually agreed timeframe. Decisions are issued within 14 working days of the Board meeting.

Ongoing monitoring

Accreditation is not a one-time event. Accredited institutions submit annual monitoring returns demonstrating continued adherence to the standards and progress against an agreed improvement plan, with scheduled follow-ups where conditions were attached to the award. Where quality declines materially, Accredo can place an institution on probation or withdraw accreditation.

Reaccreditation

Accreditation runs for four years, after which institutions complete reaccreditation to retain their status: updated documentation, a further inspection where warranted, and evidence of ongoing compliance. Institutions that complete reaccreditation retain member status without interruption.
