Who is online institution accreditation for?

Fully online universities, colleges, academies, and course providers, and campus institutions with substantial hybrid provision. Online education's credibility problem is real — diploma mills exist — which is precisely why credible online providers benefit most from independent inspection: it separates them, visibly and verifiably, from the providers that will not open their platforms to an inspector.

What do inspectors assess?

The criteria are adapted to digital delivery rather than copied from campus inspection:

• Learning platform quality: content standards, accessibility, and learner experience
• Instructional design: whether courses teach, or merely present material
• Assessment integrity: identity verification, proctoring approach, and academic-misconduct controls
• Tutor presence, feedback turnaround, and learner engagement monitoring
• Learner support: onboarding, technical help, guidance, and complaint handling
• Outcomes evidence: completion rates, assessment results, and learner destinations
• Governance, data protection, and truthful marketing of what the credential is

All criteria derive from the ten Accredo Standards, aligned with the ESG framework.

How does the process work?

3. Desk reviewInspectors assess your evidence and request clarification where needed.
4. InspectionOn-site or virtual: observed teaching, facility review, and interviews with leadership, staff, and students.
5. Report, decision & awardA graded written report goes to the Accreditation Board; successful institutions are accredited for four years.
6. Annual monitoringYearly returns and an agreed improvement plan through to reaccreditation in year four.
